Le spectacle apparaît comme une notion centrale dans l’œuvre et la vie de Rousseau. D’une part Rousseau expose à ses contemporains le haut prix du « spectacle de la nature » consolateur de tous les maux et preuve persistante de la Providence. D’autre part il se révèle toujours hanté d’images et de chimères et il voit dans la fête antique le spectacle (humain et sociétal) pur par excellence : celui où rien n’est représenté et où le spectateur est à lui-même (et à ses congénères en empathie) son propre spectacle. Ce volume, qui réunit quelques uns des meilleurs spécialistes de Rousseau, s’efforce de relire son œuvre à la lumière d’une notion qui permet en particulier de considérer simultanément le penseur et le créateur de formes : loin de se limiter au Rousseau pourfendeur des spectacles, on s’est proposé non seulement de réévaluer la composante proprement dramatique de sa production, mais d’insister sur une dimension essentielle de sa pensée et de son écriture. En cette œuvre où le registre visuel est sollicité en permanence, fût-ce pour faire signe vers un invisible qui le dépasse, c’est cette partie liée de l’écriture et du spectacle qu’il s’agit d’explorer.
