Archaïque, mais bricoleur, le théâtre a toujours absorbé les inventions techniques de son époque, qu'elles soient mécaniques, électriques, filmiques ou électroniques. En intégrant ces nouveautés, il sait en détourner l'usage à son profit, tant qu'il demeure dans son espace et dans son temps, marqués par la mémoire et par le jeu de ses acteurs polyvalents, maîtres de la scène, des mouvements de leur corps et de leur voix. L'histoire du théâtre du XXe siècle est remplie d'exemples fameux de plateaux envahis d'écrans - de Meyerhold à Sellars, de Piscator à Svoboda, d'Eisenstein à Peyret. Le maniement de l'outil-vidéo, plus souple que l'outil-cinéma, la possibilité de retraitement en direct des images, transforment leurs conditions de production et les vingt dernières années du siècle ont vu progressivement les moniteurs croître et se multiplier sur scène. Il peut s'agir là d'un simple effet de mode. Mais utiliser sur scène les images, des plus simples aux plus sophistiquées, ne signifie pas forcément céder à leur pouvoir et se soumettre à l'idolâtrie de |l'imagerie| dominante. En effet, isolée de l'incontinence du flux communicationnel qui la porte, l'image peut se faire étrange, lieu d'un possible discours critique. Fruit du travail collectif de l'équipe |Théâtre et cinéma| du Laboratoire de recherches sur les arts du spectacle du CNRS, ce livre s'attache à recenser, contre certaines attitudes de repli frileux et à partir d'analyses de spectacles montés durant les deux dernières décennies, en Europe, aux USA, au Canada, les différents usages des écrans installés sur une scène, les réussites, les échecs, les dangers. En quête d'une authentique écriture polyvisuelle où la scène instrumentalise les écrans sans abandonner les spécificités du fonctionnement de son dispositif propre, nombre de spectacles montrent que, dans la fragilité et la marginalité où il se trouve aujourd'hui, le théâtre peut intégrer par tissages et croisements les autres médias. Et que, confronté à une |multicorporéité|, à ses doubles ou à ceux des autres, présents en scène ou bien absents, l'acteur apprend à produire un suspense capable de renforcer la qualité d'écoute et d'attention du public...
