Nourri des avant-gardes européennes des années vingt et cinquante du siècle dernier, au carrefour des arts plastiques, de la littérature, de la danse et du théâtre, le butô est un mouvement pionnier fondé par HIJIKATA Tatsumi et qui bénéficia de la collaboration d'ÔNO Kazuo. Cette danse | du corps obscur |, imprégnée de bouddhisme et de croyances shintô, est plus proche de la performance que d'une chorégraphie occidentale, mais, en explorant le corps japonais, elle retrouve des archétypes universels. Née au Japon dans les remous socio-politiques des années soixante et fruit d'une rébellion, elle oblige l'interprète à repenser ses actions corporelles, sa relation au cosmos, son être-au-monde. Elle atteint profondément le spectateur et lui propose une philosophie de vie. Mais elle est difficilement saisissable. Chaque artiste invente | son | butô. D'où notre titre: Butô(s). Cet ouvrage est le premier, en France, à retracer l'histoire du butô des origines et de ses ramifications, à analyser cet art qui fascine tous les publics et influence aujourd'hui la danse contemporaine, à s'intéresser à son esthétique et à son devenir. Cette recherche a pu être menée grâce à la collaboration d'artistes et de chercheurs japonais, américains et français.
